Metaphysics: Classical and Popular Concepts
According to the American Heritage Dictionary, “metaphysics” means “the branch of philosophy that systematically investigates the nature of first principles and problems of ultimate reality. Metaphysics includes the study of being (ontology) and, often, the study of the structure of the universe (cosmology).” It deals with the questions such as: What can exist apart from our consciousness? Is ultimate reality reducible to a single substance? Is there order in the universe or chaos? In this course the student will: understand the historical background of the term “metaphysics”, learn how both art and religion reach beyond the physical to the spiritual, understand how the concept of “Self” fits into the wider field of metaphysics, learn virtue as the bridge between morality and religion, understand how the mind can create our reality, and learn the techniques in training the science of mind.
