The Interfaith Seminary offers the following
degrees in Religious Sociology:
M.A. Master of Arts in Religious Sociology
Ph.D. Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Sociology
Degree Description:
Religious Sociology is first the study of society
and social interaction, second it is the study of religion. This
degree looks at how people, either on an individual level or as
a group, relate to and experience and basically interact with
religion, religious ideas and institutions in their lives. Some
of the questions it asks are: How does religion reflect a society?
How does a society reflect its religions? How do people bring
religion and religious ideas into their daily lives? What is the
importance and value of a religion for a society? How have societies
over the decades varied in their approaches to religion? How does
a state that is pluralistic in its religious make-up differ from
one that has an official state religion? Not all these questions
will be covered in depth by this degree, but the foundation for
this further exploration will be laid.
This is not the study of theology on its own or of any one religious
group nor is it a comparative religious degree.
